Fabrics
How do I know how much fabric I need?

Before placing your order, we recommend you seek the advice of an upholsterer or a curtain maker.

What are your fabrics suitable for?

Our fabrics are suitable for curtain making, upholstery, fabric walling and all interior use.

What is your Martindale Rub Test?

The Martindale Rub tests for our fabrics are as follows:

  • 100% Cotton – 30,000
  • 100% Linen – over 25,000
  • Union of Cotton and Linen – 20,000

The lighter cloths used in the making of our lampshades have a lower rub test result making them unsuitable for upholstery.

Do you guarantee match to sample every time?

We strongly advise ordering samples before meters of fabric as colours may differ when viewed on screen. Our use of natural fibres, pigments and traditional printing methods means that it is not always possible to give an exact colour or impression match to your sample. Our quality control is such that we would never send a product of which we were not proud nor confident that the match is good.

Where are your fabrics printed?

All fabrics are designed and printed in our own Studio and factory in England.

Wallpapers
What are the wallpaper dimensions?

Roll length: 10 meters | 11 yards

Roll width: 67cm | 26 3/8 inches

What is the lead-time for wallpaper?

Wallpaper orders will be printed and shipped within seven working days.

Have you just copied your fabric designs onto paper?

No – With our wallpapers, we have faithfully translated our beloved fabric designs in all their depth, intricacy and mystique – something many believed was impossible.

Through evolutions in printing technology, and the painstaking work of our studio and production teams, our wallpapers maintain perfect visual harmony and design integrity across our collections, and also stand as beautiful, desirable products in their own right.

If on examining them you are still left wondering exactly how it was done, we will consider our success complete.

How closely do the wallpaper designs and colours match your fabrics?

The patterns are an exact match. The colours have been carefully developed in our design studio to colour match in natural daylight.

We would recommend ordering a wallpaper sample to make sure that your chosen colour matches in your particular prevailing light.

Why can’t I see the design I want in wallpaper?

We are translating all our fabric designs into wallpaper. As this is a careful and time-intensive process we will be launching further patterns each Spring and Autumn until 2027 to bring you every Fermoie fabric pattern as a wallpaper.

What kind of ink do you use?

As with our fabrics, we use only water-based ink; our printing machines are designed to use every drop to minimise waste. The exact ink we use is UL ECOLOGO® GREENGUARD GOLD certified to standards for low chemical emissions into indoor air.

Is it printed to order?

Yes. Our wallpaper is printed to order, allowing us to minimise waste and support our sustainability manifesto – tread lightly on the Earth.

How should the wallpaper be hung?

We strongly recommend hiring a professional decorator to obtain the best results.

What wall preparation do you recommend?

For best results, walls should be smooth, dry, and free from dust, grease, and any contaminants that may affect adhesion or cause staining.

All existing wallpaper, backing, and lining paper must be fully removed, and any holes, cracks, or surface imperfections should be filled and sanded as required.

Powdery, flaky, or highly absorbent surfaces should be scraped back and treated with a high-quality primer sealer, applied according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Allow to dry thoroughly before proceeding.

Previously painted surfaces should be washed, lightly sanded to create a key, and sealed with a primer as above.

We recommend using good quality medium-to heavyweight lining paper (approximately 1200–1400 grade) for optimal results.

We strongly recommend cross lining the walls prior to installation. For photography we used Wallrock smooth lining paper.

How should I paste the wallpaper?

With Fermoie wallpaper, you can paste either the paper or the wall, whichever method you prefer. Use a mid-weight, good-quality paste for the best results.

Smooth out bubbles with a wallpaper brush or plastic smoother. Trim top and bottom edges with a sharp blade.

How do I care for the wallpaper once hung

Our wallpaper is lovingly crafted and highly durable, especially when treated kindly. To clean it, simply wipe gently with a lightly moistened cloth. The wallpaper is not washable or scrub resistant.

Outdoor Fabrics
What makes Fermoie Indoor-Outdoor fabrics so special?

All the fabrics are produced on a new, specially woven basecloth made from 100% recycled plastic bottles. Our Indoor-Outdoor collection is printed using the same screens and pigments as our fine interior fabrics, the collection is made without PFCs, PFAS and other harmful ‘forever chemicals’.

What are ‘forever chemicals’?

Several families of synthetic organic chemicals, including PFCs, PFAS, PFAS and PFOA, are commonly used to make fabrics water-repellent and stain-resistant. Their exact structures differ slightly, but they’re all virtually indestructible and persist almost indefinitely in the environment – hence the term ‘forever chemicals’.

How many designs and colourways are we launching?

23 design/colourways in a selection of our iconic interior fabrics designs; Shell Grotto, Poulton Stripe, York Stripe, Sicily, Strie, Rabanna, Wicker and Orchard Stripe.

What does the cloth look like?

It’s woven in the same construction as our cotton twill.

Does its water repellency make it feel sticky, oily or stiff?

No. It has the same soft, natural feel as our interior fabrics.

Does Fermoie make Indoor-Outdoor fabrics itself?

Yes, like all Fermoie fabrics, they’re made entirely in-house using our own basecloth, proprietary colour-mixing and production techniques.

Why did we create our Indoor-Outdoor collection?

For years, customers (particularly in the US) have been asking us when we’ll produce fabrics they can use outdoors as well as in. We’ve always politely but firmly replied that we’d do so just as soon as we could translate the look and feel of interior fabrics authentically and sustainably. It’s been a long, painstaking process, but through patience, innovation, careful development and strict adherence to our founding values, we’ve finally achieved it

Why has it taken so long?

Most water- and stain-resistant fabrics contain ‘forever chemicals’ from the PFCs and PFAS families. These materials are not compatible with our founding sustainability values and we were not prepared to compromise. We have taken the time to develop and perfect a fabric composition that gives the performance and longevity our customers demand, while avoiding the use of these harmful substances.

How are 'forever chemicals' harmful?

All these chemical families are toxic to wildlife and humans, even at very low concentrations, and are associated with a range of health problems, including various cancers, hormone disruption, liver and thyroid disorders, reduced vaccine effectiveness, reproductive harm and abnormal foetal development. Because they’re so persistent, they also bioaccumulate, which means they’re passed along the food chain, with whatever is at the top (usually us) most seriously affected.

For more details on these chemicals and the relevant international regulations, please refer to the Technical Data Sheet.

How does not using these ‘forever chemicals’ affect the fabrics’ performance?

In practical terms, very little, but to maximise their performance and longevity, treat them as you would our interior fabrics. The most important things customers need to be aware of are:

  • These fabrics are water-resistant but not fully waterproof
  • Care should be taken to avoid stains, particularly from oily substances. There’s currently no means by which we, or anyone else, can make fabrics fully stain-proof without using ‘forever chemicals’
Can I leave my Indoor-Outdoor fabric outside all year round?

We don’t recommend it.As with most outdoor textiles, they will last much longer and retain their colour better if stored indoors when not in use, particularly during periods of strong sunlight, rain, cold, or damp weather.

How should I care for my fabric?

Our Indoor-Outdoor fabrics can be machine-washed or dry-cleaned.

  • Machine-washing: We recommend using mild liquid detergent. Run a full load and wash on a short, cool (30C/86F) cycle. Hang to dry.
  • Dry-cleaning: We recommend using a professional dry cleaner
Can I use bleach to remove stains?

No. Bleach will discolour or remove the pigments in the fabric.

Can I renew the water repellency?

Yes. Like all outdoor fabrics, ours will need some TLC during their lifetime to maintain their water repellency. We recommend using a PFAS/PFC-free waterproofing solution: our preferred product is TX Direct spray-on its available online and at most outdoor shops.

What can Indoor-Outdoor be used for?

Upholstery, curtains and cushions, indoors or outdoors.

What is the Martindale rub count?

The fabrics have a Martindale rub test score of 40,000.

What is the order lead time?

We aim to dispatch Indoor-Outdoor fabrics within 14 working days from receipt of order.

What is the minimum order?

4 metres.
